  1. “Sometimes, I guess there just aren’t enough rocks. ”

  2. Funny!

  3. For me, based on speaking with my grandmother, my parents, and aunts and uncles, this is a third time ’round thing.

When my maternal great great grandparents came here from Ireland, the scapegoats were the Irish — “No Irish need apply.”

When my paternal great grandparents came here from Italy, the Italians were the scourge of the earth.

Now, I’m raising two children who are 50% Mexican. While I heard the same sort of junk I hear on that video that I heard before we had kids, I just assumed it would die down by now. I recognized the simple fact that people have always put themselves into smaller groups of people in order to feel strong by excluding others. I also recognized people fear — rather than study and learn about — things they don’t understand. And it was always apparent to me that many folks are self-centered, such that they don’t like people speaking different languages around them, in large part because these same sorts always believe the speaker of the foreign tongue is talking about them.

But, I never thought it would continue to escalate over the years.

Any idea which will be the next nationality to capture the fear and imagination of white, English speaking Americans will be?

(I’ll take my answer off the air).

  4. You make some good points. As for this being a ‘third time around’ though, you might want to check out this article from PBS

I’ll do the off the air when I get back from the farmer’s market.
