How do we find out what we know? How do we know what we find out?

At lunch yesterday I asked a friend if she knew that our local international airport was closed for two hours because of a bomb threat. She hadn’t heard this. Did she know that there was an international military joint task force exercise involving over 15,000 service people from several countries just off our coastline? She hadn’t heard this either. How about this. Our former senator admitted to playing hide the salami with someone other than his wife.

That she knew.

  1. Perhaps an underappreciated poet of our times can address your concerns:

There are known knowns. These are things we know that we know. There are known unknowns. That is to say, there are things that we know we don’t know. But there are also unknown unknowns. There are things we don’t know we don’t know.

    Donald Rumsfeld
