When I took the family to Mexico in June, the kids asked me what Mexican people do when they want authentic American food. I struggled with that; perhaps, you know, there might be diners in Mexico City with “greasy spoon” type food?
And maybe there are. Greasy spoon is certainly American.
But then we climbed to the original Basillica de Guadalupe in Mexico City and as we ascended the stairs, we looked out, above the older, larger one, and above the new basillica. And there, like a message from God, came our answer:
It was the golden arches of McDonald’s.
I don’t know if you saw this but, thought you might get a kick out of it.

We are, if not full fledged foodies, at least well rounded in our experiences with diverse cuisines. My children have also asked, what exactly is authentic American? We found it. The diner just off the Taconic State Parkway about 30 miles south of Troy; milkshakes and chocolate pie. Yup. That’ll do.
